WHAT IS CATARACT?
Most cataracts are age-related, affecting vision. A cataract is the opacification of an individual’s natural lens. This results in a number of symptoms, which include blurring of the vision, changes in refractive error, reduction in night vision and contrast sensitivity. Cataract eye surgery is the only recommended treatment method for patients diagnosed with cataracts.
CATARACTS AND THEIR TYPES
- Age-Related Cataracts: Age-related cataracts develop gradually over time and are caused by natural changes in the lens.
- Congenital Cataracts: Congenital cataracts are present at birth or develop during the first year of life. They can be caused by genetic disorders, infections during pregnancy, or other medical problems.
- Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts: Posterior subcapsular cataracts affect the back of the lens and can cause glare and difficulty seeing at night.
- Cortical Cataracts: Cortical cataracts affect the outer edges of the lens and can cause blurry vision and halos around lights.
- Nuclear Cataracts: Nuclear cataracts affect the centre of the lens and can cause yellowing of the lens and difficulty seeing in bright light.
Irrespective of the type of cataract you are diagnosed with, Advanced Eye Clinic and Surgery can provide you with great patient care for your cataract surgery in Singapore.
CATARACT SURGERY IN SINGAPORE
Cataract surgery is a common and safe procedure that is performed to remove the clouded lens (cataract) from the eye. During the surgery, a skilled cataract surgeon in Singapore will remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial lens, known as an intraocular lens (IOL). The surgery usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes and is performed as an outpatient procedure.
WHAT IS AN INTRAOCULAR LENS?
Currently, there are many advanced intraocular lenses which can help a patient achieve spectacle independence after cataract surgery.
- Monofocal intraocular lenses can correct refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, and presbyopia. While patients with monofocal intraocular lenses following surgery can see objects in the distance well, they will require reading glasses for near vision.
- Multifocal intraocular lenses have several focal points. Current models of multifocal intraocular lenses are the trifocal models, which have distant, intermediate and near focal points. This enables patients to get about and attend to most of their regular activities, reducing spectacle dependency.
- Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses enable patients to see distant and immediate objects and are widely used to treat presbyopia as well. Unlike multifocal lenses, which have multiple focal points, EDOF lenses create a single elongated focal point to improve the range of clear vision. One significant benefit of novel EDOF intraocular lenses is the reduced occurrence of nighttime vision issues that may be associated with multifocal intraocular lenses.
- Toric Intraocular lens is an astigmatism-correcting intraocular lens used at the time of cataract surgery to decrease postoperative astigmatism. Depending on the specific diagnosis, your cataract surgeon in Singapore will advise on the ideal type of IOL to use.
