LASIK Xtra SURGERY

LASIK Xtra surgery is a LASIK procedure which includes the additional step of cross-linking the cornea during the LASIK surgery. It is a painless process that which takes about two minutes in total on top of the normal LASIK surgery time.

The aim of LASIK Xtra eye surgery is similar to LASIK, which is to reduce spectacle or contact lens dependence. However, through the additional step of cross-linking, the procedure aims to strengthen the cornea after LASIK surgery, thereby reducing the risk of cornea ectasia and regression. Cornea ectasia is a rare complication of LASIK whereby the cornea loses its spherical shape and becomes distorted. Regression is when myopia or astigmatism gradually recurs even after a successful LASIK surgery.

LASIK Xtra surgery comprises the following steps:

  1. LASIK surgery is performed as usual
  2. VibeX Xtra eye drops are applied to the cornea
  3. The cornea is then illuminated with ultraviolet A (UVA) light
  4. The light cross-links the collagen fibres within the cornea, making it stronger
