Anti-Complement Therapy for Geographic Atrophy Administered by Dr Teo
On 31 October 2024, Dr Kelvin Teo administered anti-complement therapy for geographic atrophy (GA) at Mount Elizabeth Hospital under early-access approval. This is the first such treatment administered in Singapore.
Geographic atrophy is an advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) that can lead to central vision loss. While wet AMD can be managed with anti-VEGF injections, treatment options for GA have been limited until recently.
The therapy administered was Izervay (avacincaptad pegol), which has been evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials (GATHER1 & GATHER2) for its ability to address GA lesion growth. This procedure was carried out on a named-patient basis under early-access approval.
AMD affects over 200 million people globally, with increasing prevalence in Asia’s aging populations. AMD includes two subtypes: wet and dry, with the dry form being more common. Anti-complement therapies such as Izervay work by targeting the complement pathway, part of the immune system involved in retinal cell damage in GA.
Dr Teo is a retina specialist with clinical focus on complex retinal conditions including angiogenic and atrophic macular degeneration. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers. He maintains a research focus on retinal therapies and imaging while in private practice.

Associate Professor Kelvin Teo is a senior consultant ophthalmologist at Advanced Eye Clinic and Surgery, with a special focus on complex retinal diseases. He is a cataract surgeon and retinal specialist with clinical expertise in age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and retinal vascular disorders.
Dr Teo graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and went on to earn a PhD in Medical Research from the University of Sydney. He completed his ophthalmology specialist training at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), where he practised for over a decade. His dual fellowships in Medical Retina—one from SNEC and the other from the Sydney Eye Hospital—further deepened his subspecialty expertise.
As an adjunct Associate Professor at the Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Academic Clinical Programme (EYE ACP), Duke-NUS Medical School, and a lead researcher at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), A/Prof Teo actively contributes to research on the aging eye, macular degeneration, and retinal imaging and treatment. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and secured major national research funding, including the NMRC Transition Award.
A/Prof. Teo is invited to speak at international conferences, academic forums, and industry events. He works closely with global research networks and pharmaceutical partners on retinal therapeutics. Through his involvement in clinical trials and translational research, he offers patients access to treatments and technologies, delivering individualised care for complex retinal conditions.
