Dr Chua is the Medical Director and Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Advanced Eye Clinic & Surgery which is located at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre (Orchard) in Singapore.
Dr Chua graduated as top medical student with honours from the University of Newcastle, Australia and obtained his higher degrees in Ophthalmology from the National University of Singapore and Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and Academy of Medicine, Singapore. Dr Chua is also a member of the Singapore Society of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, and the Asia Pacific Association of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
Dr Chua practices general ophthalmology and sub-specialises in cataract and refractive surgery. In cataract surgery, Dr Chua is a pioneer and the first to perform laser-assisted cataract surgery in Mount Elizabeth Hospital and has performed these surgeries in many patients including foreign VIPs and celebrities from ASIAN countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives etc.
In addition to LASIK, SMILE and advanced surface ablation techniques such as PRK and epi-LASIK using the latest excimer and femtosecond laser technology, Dr Chua also performs phakic intraocular lens surgery using the implantable contact lens (ICL) to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
Dr Chua also treats eye conditions such as glaucoma and is the first to perform minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) using iStent and Hydrus at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Other conditions commonly treated by Dr Chua include: dry eye, pterygium, keratoconus, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, macular degeneration and childhood myopia.
Dr Chua has presented at more than 100 international scientific meetings and published more than 25 peer-reviewed papers in the areas of glaucoma, refractive errors, LASIK, cataract lens implants and dry eye treatment. Dr Chua has also been involved as investigator in several US FDA clinical trials and received the Outstanding Award in Clinical Ophthalmology at the inaugural SERI-ARVO Meeting on Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
